Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are for iodine deficiency? I am still trying to find out what is actually wrong with Lacey. I have never seen her at the iodine block but she does occasionally nibble the cuttle bone. The nurse at the vets phoned me yesterday saying they had a new antibiotic, different from Baytril. I am awaiting a call back to discuss this.

Have found this on the net that may be of interest? What are the signs of a goiter in birds? The thyroid gland of a bird is located in the chest cavity, and, when enlarged, can place pressure on the heart, digestive system, lungs, and air sacs. The pressure on the heart may also cause buildup of fluids in the respiratory system. Excess fluids may also be produced in the digestive system. Signs of an enlarged thyroid include: Seizures and sudden death due to a physical compression of the heart and large blood vessels Difficulty swallowing Crop distention Regurgitation Weight loss Lack of appetite due to blockage of the esophagus Difficulty breathing Wheezing A "squeak" during inspiration or expiration A change in song or voice It can be treated with iodine supplement usually given in water. I don't know if that is any help?

My vet queried iodine deficiency in Luee when he had respiratory problems. I wonder if he had a long-term deficiency before I got him as he has a ticky (like second hand on clock) tail sometimes. He has got access to a block now of course, and seems well apart from this.
Poor Lacey - I hope new antibiotic works better for her.

Thanks Hezz, yes I think you are right. Thank you samwiseg, will be ordering some liquid iodine. It's worth a try. Yes skysmum, she does eat a little corn and egg, has had it the last two days. She doesn't eat much, but Charlie feeds her with it as well!!

Iodine tincture is what you need, Shirls. 25mg/ml is the concentration.
