With the whole kerfuffle with Smudge last week, something else was picked up, that hasn't yet been addressed - Coccidia. Even with the general worming program I have been implementing, with Ivermectin, this little nasty apparently is not on the Ivermectin to-do list. It needs its own treatment program apparently, like this: www.birdsupplynh.com/vetafarm/msds_coccivet.pdf and the other broad spectrum wormer, Avitrol Plus doesn't cover it either. This is an interesting article that I came across, although it is a few years old, and Aussie orientated. Still worth thinking about for those introducing new birds to the flock, and the whole eating their own poop question is often raised. www.bcv.asn.au/Coccidiosis2.htm

Very informative Hezz. Thank you. I was completely aware of this as far as the chickens are concerned and a very strict regime in hygiene has to be followed at all times, not only for coccidiosis but lice and mites and all sorts of nasties!! But was completely unaware that it could affect the budgerigar. Another reason why we have to keep our little buddies very clean. Interesting to note that if unfortunately a chicken has coccidiosis it is not transferable to the budgie!!
