Hi, I made this account because I'm in need of some help asap
I have a pair of budgies with 2 chicks (3 days old and 1 day old) and 2 more on the way. The father has since this morning developed yellow discharge around his eyes, however his eye itself looks bright and clear. He also has baldness around the eye. I have bathed it with warm salt water as found on a different thread, and have taken the decision to quarantine him for now as he was quivering a little so I got worried it may be psittacosis and I didn't want it to spread to the mother and babies and my other birds.. Is this the right thing to do? He seems fine in him self otherwise, he is eating, drinking and pooping fine, he does seem to be sleeping a little more than usual but other than that seems fine. What should I do? Should I put him back with the mother and babies and just treat it as an eye infection and continue bathing (he has only been separated a few hours)? Or should I keep him separate and get him to the vet for antibiotics? I'll try to attach photos but I'm not sure how
Any help would be great please let me know asap, I'm so worried what to do
Thank you
Sophie

After he had dried and fluffed up after being bathed, he looked pretty much back to normal, he was hopping around and singing happily, eating fine and his poos look perfectly normal so I put him back in. I have noticed there are a lot of pin feathers around his eyes. Could they be causing him the discomfort and making his eyes water? After a couple of hours he has now got discharge in the feathers around his eyes again. I have just bathed them a couple Also if I take the dad away will the mum be ok to look after the babies alone? There are 2 hatched, one pipped so I'm expecting it to hatch tonight, and the 4th is expected in a couple of days Thank you, this is so worrying

I can't get him to the vets until Monday as the avian vet is closed tomorrow, does anyone have any suggestions of eye drops or something that I could get to make him more comfortable until I can get him to the vets? Any ideas would be great

A cold wet black teabag can help as a compress, aids to soothe the irritation; if you can get some Golden Eye Ointment for the pharmacy, this is good for conjunctivitis in birds as well as humans, just don't tell them you want it for a budgie. It is quite possible that there is a feather growing the wrong way and irritating his eye. ?The vet should be able to tell if this is the case. Even saline drops would help him for now as well.
I am not a breeder, so can't really help there, but as the chicks are still very young, mum should be okay feeding them, but make sure she has easy access to all the good stuff that the cock would be bringing her - a sprig of millet in the box, fresh food mix, boiled egg or eggfood, good seed mix.

Good news, this morning I woke up expecting to find him with mucky feathers around his eyes again, but to my surprise his eyes are looking pretty perfect! He has a little muck on one eye but no where near as badly as before. I'm keeping an eye on him and I'll continue bathing his eyes, but I'm so pleased with his improvement Thank you for all the help and advice to get my boy better again Sophie

That's great news Sophie, I hope his eye continues to improve, the cold tea bag, and the Golden Eye Ointment that Hezz suggested are great too if it continues, or crops up in the future.

One of the forum members (samwiseg) explained how to upload pictures, hope this helps you Sophie:- If you are having a bit of trouble trying to upload your budgie pictures and clips for the first time on the forum this may help: 1. When you select "reply" to a message (not quick reply) your "post reply" will appear 2. Next to "Image Upload Links", select "TinyPic" and it will bring up a separate window 3. Choose if you wish to upload an image or video and then select "upload now" 4. Go through the security bit 5. Once your image or video has loaded, you will be given a list of http codes 6. "Copy" and "paste" the code for "IMG code for Forums & Message Boards" into your "Post Reply" text window. It will show as a link, but when you preview your message it will show as a picture. Then once finished typing, post your message. And here on the forum WE LOVE YOUR PICTURES & VIDEOS! So the more you add the better we like!
