Hi, I have a male budgie called Ozzie who is 2 years old. He is my only male and recently his cere has changed from the bright blue it first was to a crusty dark pink like a females cere. I've tried to do some research over the internet and the only thing that really comes up is either testicular cancer or kidney disease. Now when I tried looking for other signs and symptons I could not find any. The reason for this is because Ozzie plucks his own feathers and is very scruffy. Didn't know if this was a sign? Apart from that he eats regulary, is very active and seems to be a happy normal bird. Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. Someone will be online to answer your questions soon. One of my budgies had testicular cancer, but he was much older than yours, and the first symptom I noticed was a paralyzed leg. I do not know if this information will help at all, but I wish you luck in finding a solution for your little guy's condition. Keep us posted.

Hi, welcome from me too. I'm sorry that your little guy Ozzie is ill, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about budgies to help you out either, someone will definitely give you an answer though, some of the more experienced members. Do you have an avian vet near you that you could take him to get checked out? Please let us know how he is.

Could you post a picture of him? It might help with identifying the problem. And as has already been said he needs to see an avian vet.

Try giving him iodine drops in his water; iodine deficiency can also turn the cere brown and if it is the case the addition to the water apparently works very quickly, so that in a few days to a week or so you would have an answer. What you need is iodine tincture 25mg/ml; you should be able to get it from the chemist. 3 drops per 100mls of water. Unfortunately it is more likely to be the tumour, but it doesn't hurt them to have the iodine, even if their thyroid is working fine. The feather plucking may be related to testicular problems causing changes in his hormone levels. But even if he does have a testicular tumour, he may still have quite a good amount of life left in him yet.
