Hey, I'm a first time bird owner. I've had my budgie for less than 3 days. I've been slowly working with him and I believe things are going well. I am not sure if I'm just freaking myself out as I do research, but I'm worried he may have mites. If he does it's very early. These pictures probably aren't helpful because I had to use my phone. He's not been very active and I know this is because he's in a new place. I've noticed today he's doing this action with his feet, like flexing with lifting the toes without lifting the foot. This could maybe be from me playing music for him? He has been kinda quiet until today when I started playing music for him so I'm really not sure.

Hmmm...idk why it comes up from as suspicious. It's just an image hosting site since I can't just directly post them to here.

I'm not sure the pictures even really show much to look at. I have turned the music off and he is still doing the foot/toe flexing, but I have no clue if this is normal or from being itchy. I haven't seen him biting or scratching a lot. The toe movements just make me think of when your hand itches.

Flexing his foot doesn't really sound like a case of mites to me - does he have any small whitish lumps on his feet or legs? This would be more an indication of mites in my opinion. Are all his perches the same size, are they wooden dowels or plastic, sanded, any combination of these? It could be that his feet are not getting any exercise and cramping up from being in the one position. The best perches for your budgie are natural tree branches from budgie safe trees (plenty of sites on the internet to check this out) of differing thicknesses and textures, so his feet get all the exercise they need. Also if you have any sand sheets, or perches, ladders, please throw them into the closest bin, immediately! They have no benefit and can cause the most awful sores on the bottom of your bird's feet.

It could be the perching, if he's trying to relieve cramping. He hadn't been moving around a lot, being in a new home. I am a worrier over things like this. Right now he has the plain wooden dowel perches. As soon as he is more comfortable with me I definitely want to get him more natural perching, but I would like to wait for now. He just started eating today, without it being on my finger. He hasn't touched his toys yet. I'm not sure if maybe one of his legs is just a little dry, but right at the junction of his front facing toes looks dry and I'm not sure if this may be itching and may be mites. I know I sound crazy, but I worry about the health of my pets quite a bit. Thank you for your reply. I may feel better after observing him not being a stiff scared bird more.

Playing with toys will usually come once he is feeling settle and safe. Once he is more relaxed he will start to explore his little world.

I took him to be looked at by the place I got him from, not a big chain store. They do a little breeding and hand raise many birds. Mine was not, but that doesn't bother me. He has a good disposition. He doesn't bite and already knows "step up" in his cage. It's out of the cage he needs help with. Anyway, they say they can't see anything that should cause worry. In a month if I do see scaly face/leg development I'll take him to an avian vet since the health guarantee at the store will be up. I'm already in love with him so much.

Get a magnifying glass and look at his legs and on the perches, especially at the ends of the perches, and see if there are any red mites. If there are mites, get some mites spray and follow the instructions. Make sure you spray the ends of the perches especially where the notch is as that will be where they hide.
