I've read the debates over garlic, but I was wondering if anyone has information on if the garlic being in the food aids in deterring mites. My budgie doesn't seem to like garlic, but I mixed a small amount in his seed in case he inadvertently ingests some. I can't find anything on the effects of just having garlic in the cage. The amount I put in may not even be enough to act in that way. I didn't want to pose a threat to his health by having a lot in his food.

Garlic is something they need to get used to, I feel. It's not something they take to just because it is good for them. If you can get him eating it, it cannot do any harm, but how good it is ........ only a budgie would know, and they aren't telling.

I too have heard that garlic powder (WITHOUT SALT) is recommended for budgies and other birds to help prevent the attack of mites. Breeders often mix it in with the budgies food as well but as Hezz said they do have to get used to it

I would have thought garlic would keep anything away.

I would have thought garlic would keep anything away. I eat a lot of it and I don't have mites. Don't have much of a social life any more either.

This is just a single budgie in an apartment. Would dia earth still help with an inside cage? We've used it do our cats and fleas before.

In my opinion It's unlikely that he will get mites. And if he does you can easily treat them. I have an indoor aviary with 10 birds plus 5 other birds, 2 of which I've had for 15+ years, and none of them have ever had mites. Wash all food and branches you get from the garden with F10 and you shouldn't have any problems.

Thank you. I'm sure he won't get them after we get him checked this first time. He has a vet appointment tomorrow because even though the store says he is fine I don't think they saw what I did. If the vet says he is fine then I will stop worrying. His entire cage and toys will be disinfected before he goes back in.
If he has some scaly mites it's not very far along. I've noticed a crusty spot where cere meets beak on one side with what looks like wondering grooves from the crusty spot. And tiny tiny holes around his feet. It isn't major or causing issues right now, but I need peace of mind by having him checked and treated.
