I wasn't sure how to word the title and I'm not sure if this should go under health, so I'm sorry. It's been a little over a week with Basal. I cover all but one side of his cage at night, but I don't know if this was done at the store. He has different perches to choose from and for the first several days I would find him on one of those perches in the morning. The last two days though he has been on top of a treat feeder toy that is plastic and I don't feel would be comfortable. He sleeps on the back part that could be filled for a continuous feeding like the ones for cats and dogs, but when I give him treats I place them in the bottom of it, never filling it. Could he still be getting used to the routine of being covered if he wasn't before? Should I stop covering him? I could maybe take the toy out every night but he likes the mirror when he's not on top of the entire thing. I can get a picture later, but I'm about to leave soon.

Hi Rae, budgies seem to get themselves into the most uncomfortable looking spots and positions at times but are quite happy to sleep there! I think this is perfectly normal. My Kiwi sleeps on a plastic abacus toy with a mirror on, he has a choice of wooden perches but prefers the toy. My cockatiel sleeps on his water dish! Again, has a choice of big comfy perches but settles down on this plastic water dish! It's madness. I think Basal is just being a typical budgie. Keep covering him at night. Leave the toy in. He will eventually decide where he likes to sleep, and the covers will keep him warm and settled. I think some other members on here have budgies that sleep clung to cage bars and upside down and all sorts!

That's good to hear. I didn't want him to be uncomfortable, but I guess if he was he wouldn't sleep there then. Thank you so much for your reply.

I think lemonade has pretty well covered it all. You can throw the cover over him completely, too. He will probably sleep better, as long as the room isn't too dark.

If the cover is completely over I do think it might be too dark, unless I left a light on. Would that be better for him or just the all but one side covered with a dark room.

I guess you would need to experiment to be sure. Being new, he will need to be able to see where his perches are if he does have a night fright. Try leaving just one end open, or using a light cover .... I use an old sheet; it gives them the cover they need but allows enough light to sort themselves out for sleeping.

I might leave him less covered tonight and see if it helps him. He wasn't on top of the toy this morning but was still on the regular sitting spot on the toy.

Like Hezz says, for now he might need some light. My budgie's so used to his cage layout now that he navigates it in complete darkness. Oh, and he sleeps with his eyes open, which is quite scary when you do catch him sleeping! So like everyone else has said, sounds like perfectly normal budgie behaviour
