So, I've had Basal 3 weeks now. He's still quite timid, even in his cage. When should I start worrying about beak health? I've read that usually it's not something that has to be seen to, as in trimming the beak. He has natural wood perches and cuddlebone, and if he would use it he has wood toys. But he hasn't touched anything yet.

Post a close up pic of his beak.
Usually they do not need our intervention. I have only had one budgie that needed beak trimming and he had liver problems.
I do not recommend trimming yourself unless you are really really confident as it can be fatal if you make an error.

I will get a picture tonight when my husband is home. His phone takes better pictures. I don't think he's anywhere close to needing help. But since he hasn't chewed on anything and I'm not sure he has a strong bite. He doesn't exactly chew on the fruit and veggie pieces I put in (the ones he seems to like). He more or less gets tiny tiny pieces off wherever they most easily come off, but maybe that's because he's still not sure about the foods.

I got the best pic I could, which just amounted to a bunch of pictures for the right timed one. There is a very short pointed piece you can barely see. 1428617401098 by waterfox602, on Flickr

As long as he has things to chew on if he wants to, I see no need to worry that he isn't. As Marianne has said, there is very little need to intervene and usually it is health/diet related. And his beak seems fine in his photos.

So he will chew and work his beak when it is needed? He also has Avi-cakes that make him chew, but he hasn't taken to them in that way yet. He just picks the seeds out as best he can and throws the remaining on the cage floor

He looks okay to me. As long as he's eating and drinking then the beak is okay.
3 weeks isn't long to explore his environment.. he'll hopefully start chewing stuff soon.
