Ive got a JRT and they got past her . Many years ago i walked into the inside of the aviary to find a mouse dining at the feeder, i watched him a couple of nights later scale the boards at the bottom, through the mesh, which i couldn't believe it would fit through, run up the side wall and through the bob hole . It was double meshed after that and i never had another problem. Just one to be aware of . LOL!!! I posted my other reply without reading yours right through. Great minds, hey??

What a fantastic job Budgies Retreat. I expect you will, but I don't see any entertainment for the buds in there yet, are toys on the shopping list yet?

What a fantastic job Budgies Retreat. I expect you will, but I don't see any entertainment for the buds in there yet, are toys on the shopping list yet? They have toys in the indoor flight, but seldom use them. The Space Invader machine and the Rubiks Cube have just sat there lol
No, seriously, they have some dangly things and bells and swings inside, but I didn't want to have any outside. They're not too bothered with them to be truthful, and I have more in a box than in the flight. I may hang some rope just like they have inside, they seem to love to hang upside down a lot, and pull themselves back up, it's surprising how strong they are just using their leg power. I've got a couple of those coloured rope things with wire inside that you coil into spring shapes, I may try those again. They were more scared of them when I fitted them before. I think they thought that they were snakes! I also plan on getting some willow branches from a neighbour. He doesn't know it yet though. I will have to sweet talk him

Are you going to double-mesh it, Daz? Hi Hezz. I have no intention at this stage to double mesh, however if it needs it then I will do, but other measures would come into play first. IMO the birds are there to watch and look at. If I double mesh so the holes are twice as small then you will hardly see the birds.

They need to be kept safe, though. That, surely, is more important. But maybe your native raptors are not as industrious as ours. After having a goshawk come to check out the stray chook I had in the back yard after only 4-5 days, I wouldn't be prepared not to. And that is not even mentioning the butcher-birds.

The closest I've seen is a Red Kite, but they are not hunters, they are scavengers. I sometimes hear an owl in the nearby forest, but have never seen it. Having a solid roof on my aviary they are covered by anything scoping overhead, but I will keep an eye on things.

I finally got around to fitting an extractor fan in the bird shed today. It's a 4" fan situated in the middle of the side wall, and put on a timer plug to run for 20 minutes every 2 hours between 0800 and 2200 hrs. It apparently moves 250m3 every hour, so I don't want to have it on for too long as it is quite powerful and it will start pulling air in through any small gaps and possibly creating unnecessary drafts. I only want it to refresh the air now and then, hence why it is only on for 20 minute durations.

I don't think it'll ever be finished Steve. My next big job is to line the shed with plasterboard, but when I do I will build a new bigger indoor flight that is a permanent fixture rather than the removable one that is in there now. At least when I do start that job, I can just move the current indoor flight with the birds inside to my workshop so the job will be a bit easier, and they should only have to spend one or two nights in the workshop.

No, as I have already insulated the walls and ceiling. I might put a vapour barrier in before the PB goes on though. I will use a damp meter to see if I have any unusual readings first.

I finally finished it today, and the buds love it. Here are some more photos. Shed wall painted in emulsion, and back perch rack made and fitted. Tunnel from indoor flight with new frame. I have now placed a piece of tile on the bottom of the tunnel so they're not walking on the wire. Front rack now going in. It is shorter than the rear rack, but I have still pivoted it at the top so I can get in for maintenance etc. Front rack stays and anchor block. Water and feed pot perch. I will be fitting more water feeders, but they have two large ones in the indoor flight. I used 15mm plastic pipe clips to hold the 15mm dowel. That way I can just swap out any worn ones. Finally finished! And the buds love it, flying one end to the other. When I finally unscrewed the tunnel door, they shot out to see what all the noise was about for the last 3 days. I hope you've enjoyed the post, and if I have given you any ideas then that is good. Give me a shout if you need any further info, the photos don't always give the information needed. Kind regards Daz hi daz how u doing , just a wee question were did u get ur plastic pipe clips for holding the perches in place can send me a private male if u want cheers m8
