I think things have been going well with Basal. However, when I try to do anything with him near his cage I have to take him out (which he allows) and shut the cage door or he would go right back in. He hangs out on top of his cage but if I successfully get him to step up and slowly take him anywhere he does everything to go back.
His wings were clipped when we bought him, and before I learned better, so if he takes off he goes to the carpet. From there he will step up. On the cage top he does a lot of backing up so I have to re-angle myself a lot.
He now has a ladder so if he gets to the carpet he can get back easily. And he definitely knows how to use it. Sometimes I will get him to step up and take him away, talking softly and offering millet, and then let him go back on his own, using the ladder. I got this idea from Ditto's "workout" plan so he is at least getting some activity.
Every time he steps up he gets millet offered, only outside the cage.
Should I just continue as I'm doing and with time and more trust he will better enjoy outside cage time?
He has made leaps and bounds and does step up from the cage top more than a few weeks ago. He has also learned my shoulder is safe and gives him access to my earrings. He's become a little more vocal, usually around bedtime. But he still hasn't played with toys. I feel bad that he just sits there and I know I've been told it will come in time, but since he isn't solid on interacting with me and doesn't play yet I still feel bad. He is provided with lots of interaction in the way of talking, soft touching when he allows, and step ups and moving when possible.
