Hi all,
Percy, our rescue bird seems to be having epileptic fits. It started a couple of weeks ago when we noticed that he was having difficulties in standing and his flight coordination was very erratic. He had a fit two days ago where he fell to the bottom of the cage and tried to fly back up again to his perch, but kept missing it. After a couple of minutes, he seems to recover, but kept moving his head to one side. All was well after about 30 minutes but this morning he just fell off his perch and rolled on the bottom of the cage. I picked him up and placed him on top of the cage and he could not stand up. He then made an attempt to fly around but went down on to the floor where he kept trying to stand upright. I picked him up and held for about 5 minutes and he seems to calm down.
I have now placed him in our hospital cage where he seems to be calm now although I have noticed that he moves his head backwards as if he has something in his throat?
Percy is about 18 months old and up until now, we thought a very healthy bird but this last couple of weeks has me concerned. I have telephoned our local vets for advice and have now arranged a visit.

Percy has been put on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine(via a syringe)which I have to give him once a day to start with, then twice a day after a few days depending how he reacts to them. The vet does think it is the start of minor epileptic fits which will increase as time goes by. We are hoping that the medicine will work to a degree, but if they happen more than once a month, then we need to get him to the specialist bird vets in Birmingham where they take blood samples and x-ray his head to see if there is any signs of a problem lurking in the background. Anyway, he is back in the main cage alongside Winnie having his afternoon nap.

My very best thoughts and prayers for you and Percy. Hopefully the medicine will help his condition so he can live a long happy life. Hugs to you both.

One of our members, sweetpea, has a budgie who has been having seizures. Her vet has put the bird on Vit B injections ...... might be worth putting the question out there to your own vet.

Hello quests. I am sorry to hear that Percy has been having epileptic fits. I hope the antibiotics & medicine help. As Hezz mentioned, my Bezukhov has seizures. The symptoms are a bit different to Percy but probably equally as upsetting to watch. One thing it may also be worth doing is giving an aloe vera/milk thistle supplement to support the liver. Sometimes the liver does not efficiently flush out any toxins, resulting in things like seizures. They may look for that kind of thing in the blood tests. Hopefully, all will be okay though, & no further tests or treatment will be required.

Hi all, Thanks for all the information, will be looking out for some tonic which has vit.B in it tomorrow when I am in Worcester. Percy seems to be picking up again, although not eating as much as he should, but I put that down to the medicine that he has to have. Will keep an eye on him over the next few days.
