We've had some drama tonight. I feel so bad, I'm sick with worry.
CJ and I were spending sometime with the birds out of the cage, Although Bree has improved with her taming over the last few days she has kind of retreated backwards much to CJ's dismay.
Anyway I heard the front door open and before I could shout "The Budgie's are out!" my friend burst through the door and shouts SURPRISE!!! Blue takes it in his stride but Bree jumps in fright fly's off smacks into the wall then falls behind a bookshelf. I really don't know how she did it as the gap between the wall is so narrow, but she clearly did and was flapping to get out, the bottom half her body was behind it.
I knew something was wrong because as I picked her up she stayed on my finger, CJ started crying, My friend kept apologising and Blue was swooping around my head probably wondering what on earth was wrong with her. CJ came over, bless him in good faith to stoke her and see if she was ok which spooked her again and she tried to fly away but landed on the ground and couldn't fly at all. That's when I really started to panic. In the end I sent my friend and CJ to the shops so I could assess what was up as peaceful as possible.
Both her wings looked banged up. I can see flesh on them so she must of lost some feathers. Pictures are below, She is not holding them funny, as you can see they are not bent out of shape or floppy but she has definitely lost feathers and there is no blood visible on the wings but if you spread her wing open, it looks like blood is in the inside of the feathers (I'm sorry I'm not very good on the anatomy of budgies but it looks like a feather quill with red ink in it). I rang the vet, they were closing in 10 minutes and were happy to stay open for me but the vet said from what I've described the wings are not broken and he was worried the stress of bringing her in and handling her after such a shock might add to the stress so we have booked an appointment for tomorrow morning.
I lay with her on my tummy, stroking her to calm her down, normally her feet are quite cool but her feet felt so hot, I'm unsure if that's shock or adrenaline or what, I was quite enjoying being so close to her especially since this incident will probably have her retreat further into her shell but after about 10 minutes she flew back her the perch were Blue was, which was such a relief to see her flying normally again.
She's not eaten since back in the cage but she's had a good clean of her feathers and has flapped both wings fine but I know it could still mean she is very hurt but just not showing it. I'm hoping the fact she couldn't fly and now she can is a good sign.
My friend joked about buying me a Beware of the Budgies sign but I'm not quite at the point where I want to make a joke out of it. I'm so upset with myself, I really didn't think the bookcase would be a danger so close to the wall. I've rolled up two tea towels side by side shoved them down the gap. but I'm thinking of moving the whole thing to another room now.
I'm rambling now, I know, both birds are asleep now, I'm scared to go to bed and leave her but I don't want to interrupt her anymore by taking the cage upstairs with me either. Fingers crossed the Vets go ok tomorrow.
