Hi all. I'm new here. You all can call me Dreamer. I have never owned a budgie before-and I don't have one right now-but I plan on getting one on the first of next month. I promise to post pictures when I get him or her. I'm hoping for a male, but a female will be fine.
I live in Illinois, in the US. I have a tendency to call budgies parakeets because of that. xD The only other pet I have other than the parakeet I will be getting is six olive nerite snails, who love to eat algae wafers. They're pretty entertaining to watch, though slow. I don't really have anything much else to say.
I'd like tips on things I should know/buy when purchasing the 'keet. Any tips on taming or helping the little guy or gal adjust?
Thanks!

Hello there and welcome, plenty of information about acquiring and looking after budgies here but you'll have to wait for someone with more 'savvy' than me to direct you to the correct threads, sorry!

Thanks. I've been doing a bit of research, lots of learning. ^.^
Does anyone here have any tips for keeping them around someone who is allergic to bird dander? My mom is and I'm kinda worried.

Hello and Welcome. I wouldn't think one budgie would be much of a problem with dander, if you keep the cage clean. Misting the bird at regular intervals would help also. Others may have more tips for you. Of course you could keep your mom in the summerhouse. I didn't mean it Mom.

Thanks for the welcome. Ya, I thought so, but she's hesitant at allowing the bird I will be getting in the living room. He or she's cage will be in my room. I've been around birds before and never had any issues. I've been trying to tell her that one parakeet would require the family to be it's flock, but she's just saying "we'll see" at the bird being out of its cage and in the living room.

You should look into getting an air purifier for the main room/s. A number of our members have them and most swear by their effectiveness. I have not had to use one myself so can't really say much more but you do need to consider the size of the room it would be going into. And don't use one with an ionizer ....... that is something I remember from others but have no idea the reasoning behind it - haven't taken too much notice as it is not something that affects me.

If there is issues then it'll be considered. But they're expensive and because of that it'll be hard to get. We don't exactly have of a ton of money. Either way I can't wait to get the bird. I've been considering naming the budgie Edward if it is a male (after a favorite book character). I have no clue on a female name though.

I have a female budgie named Edward, DreamerHorse. I adopted her for a family that are moving abroad. That is also my brothers name. He came to see me the other day, what a confusing time that was. Everytime I spoke to the budgie by name, my brother answered.

They don't have to be expensive, but even so, your mother's health is more important than anything else. Also, you must consider that budgies, just like any other pet, needs to be catered for with medical bills, to be looked after properly. If money is that tight, maybe you should reconsider until you have fhe means to cater to their needs.

Thanks for the welcome birdguhl. That'd be pretty funny OP, glad I don't have anyone named EDward in my household, though I might get chewed out for naming the budgie after a fictional character all the same. >.< And if you're wondering who the fictional character is, its Edward Cullen from the Twilight Saga. (Cringes and waits for sharp objects to start flying her way.)
I guess it depends where you get it then Hezz. I live in a place where there's not a lot of options. Plain out farmland and country. Walmart would be the best place for locally for me. No worries, I do have my mother's health in mind, mind you she's the one who wants me to get the parakeet. She wants me to be happy and a bird would make me happy. And the bird would get medical care. Once the 'keet is settled and steps up onto my hand the next stop would be the vet for a checkup.

Thanks Susannah. I'm looking forward to getting the little guy, or gal. I'm still trying to decide on which color I want most. Blue or Green? It depends what the pet shoppe (Noah's Ark) will have in stock at that moment, but still confused on what color I should get.

Lol, as I mentioned before I already got a male name picked out but I'm stuck on what to name the bird I'll be getting if it turns out female. xD
