If it was a cock it would be showing darker blue by now.

Agree, Gina needs a letter-change. The boys are never that washed out colour.

I would change her name to Gino if she was a cock Bugsie, on the other hand, is looking very much a hen as you have all said. Her name might have to change! Here is a pict of them this morning. And another pict of Bugsie's cere... (because I can't get enough)

Oh, duh, Hezz!! What was I thinking? No, of course Gina can stay Gina. And I can't make up my mind about Bugsie. Some photos suggest hen, others cock, to me, but I will go along with skysmum's 50 years ........ I can't disregard that.

Bugsie's cere looks much the same lately, still mostly white with a hint of blue. Ya. No idea, still. Another vote for all hens! I'm wondering though, does it matter that Gina is an opaline cinnamon? The pictures online of this mutation of budgies looks like the ceres can be ambiguous. Gina is soooooooo cute! Thank you mintysowner. I think so, too. She also has the sweetest personality.. Of my two birds she is the one that is the most friendly. She loves to talk and be talked to, and is quite tame in comparison to Bugsie.

Gina confuses me. Watching her behaviour I definitely question her gender.
She doesn't squawk like Bugsie does, she talks and sings more than Bugsie. She regurgitates and feeds Bugsie (charming!), she does a lot of head preening for Bugsie, but I rarely see Bugsie return the favour.
Is behaviour a sign of gender?

Not necessarily; it is more a sign that Bugsie is the dominant bird and Gina is "allowed" to feed, preen Bugsie. BUT ..... there is always a but ....... that could change. When it comes to budgies, nothing is a given. From your description of Bugsie's cere she is a she.

I still have my doubts about Gina, but time will tell. If their ceres both go tan or brown in some months then I should have a definite answer. I really wanted one of each, but I suppose we can't always get what we want!

A bit of an update... I took Gina to the avian vet recently because her nares were all clogged up. He was examining Gina and asked me how old the bird was, I said 7 months old, and he said "you might want to change the bird's name!" When I asked if he thought Gina was a cock, he said that the cere looked too blue to be a hen. Oi. It never ends.
