Lol, first photo looks a bit boy, but that second one says all girl to me! So I think I would stick with hen still at this stage.

I wouldn't have even questioned that Gina was a hen, after two boards and one facebook group have all said hen without a shadow of a doubt, but then that avian vet said cock, and it's put me right back into doubt wondering. I swear Gina's cere changes from day to day. It seems to me that the white rings tend to come and go. It's just frustrating. I don't like mysteries.

Looking at the information online about the different mutations and different colours of cere, I do think there is a good chance Gina is a cock. Gina is an opaline cinnamon, and on the pictures posted, the ceres of the male opaline and cinnamon birds don't look overly blue. They look a pinky purple to me. So I think the mystery will continue. Especially since Gina acts so male.
Bugsie, on the other hand is quite obviously a hen. No mystery there!

I'd go on behaviour. Does your budgie play a lot, headbob and regurgitate to the mirror?
Does he/she bite hard?

Hi Marianne, yes! That's what first made me think Gina was a boy.. the behaviour. Gina is a head bobber for sure, and generally much more silly and playful than Bugsie. Gina has a sticky mirror. Gina talks and sings - which Bugsie does not do. And the biting thing.. Gina bites hard, and will go for me if she/he is in the mood to be feisty. Bugsie will bite but gently, if that makes any sense.. more of a nibble. Gina feeds Bugsie regularly as well, but I never see the reverse.

You know, Gina might be "a little girl, trying to be a little boy" as I was advised by someone ages ago when I first got Misty. As it happened, it was the other way round. So I guess you will be watching Gina for a while before you reach any conclusion ........ if Gina is playing the part of the cock her male hormones will be stronger than if she were playing the role of hen. The same can happen the other way as well; if you have two cocks and one plays the hen role, his cere can lose it's blueness and be suggestive of a hen. I know that doesn't help you at all, but it could explain what is going on.

I wonder, if I obtained a cock, if that would change ceres in the cage. I don't really have the cage space at the moment but I might do in the next few months. Will have to read up on it first, as I am not sure one male and two females is a good idea? Just also wanted to mention that I'm sorry for your recent loss, Hezz. Never easy *hugs*
