Hello there,
I've currently got a 2 1/2 year old male budgie, called Rupert. I've cleaned him many many times, but the last time I tried to clean him out, he freaked and hit the bottom. I put the cage straight back in its place, and he came round within minutes, however this didn't get his cage cleaned.
I managed to get a bit of tissue and just pick up some of the droppings, I was basically terrified to try again. But today, I finally plucked up the courage to try and clean him. I lifted the top of the cage off, and put it on some newspaper, and he hit the floor, started walking in circles, screaming his head off, then started to roll around on one side. I managed to pick him up, and get him to grip a perch so I could put him back in his usual space, and for the past hour and a half, it has been a vicious cycle. I tried calling my local vets, they told me to take him up. I tried and he lost all ability to do anything, the only time he has been in a car was to bring him home. As this didn't work, they suggested to try the out-of-hours number, and they can only suggest to cover him, and make no noise. However, when we first got him, we tried to cover him at night, and he would just flap and not settle, so he hasn't been used to being in complete darkness.
A little while ago, my 23 year old cockatiel started to have fits. She was having them through the night, so we left the light on, because within a few minutes she would be trying to climb up the bars, but would fall off as she couldn't see where she was going. The light has been on ever since, so recently he hasn't been in complete darkness so we are terrifed to turn it off incase she does more damage to herself.
Within the past ten minutes, he has been flapping so much, he has caught his wing, which is now currently bleeding. I just don't know what to do. In all the years I have had budgies this has never ever happened.
I was also wondering if it could have anything to with him not eating grit. There is three grit dishes in his cage, but no once has he touched it. I change it regularly, but he will never eat it. Another thing is that he always sneezes after eating his iodine block, this has happened since we got him. Could this maybe have anything to do with what has happened today?
Please comment your advice, I just don't know what's best to do.
