upload your photo by going to the quick reply box at the bottom of this post and clicking add image to post.
Then we may be able to se what is wrong.
Can you take him to the vet? he may have been sick.

He is absolutely fine now, back to normal but he did look slightly distressed when I came down to him this morning.

Was there any water on the floor?
Do you think he could have had a night fright and ended up in the water trough?

This may be the case however was just unsure about the black on his feathers? Within half hour of being with him this morning the black was gone and he was back to himself. Maybe I am just being a bit paranoid... Will keep an eye on him.

You're welcome. Keep an eye on him though to make sure he's eating and okay. Yes, I have a blue bird called hector and when his belly is wet from bathing his feathers go a bit brown

so pleased you baby is OK. Just a little bit of information for you. I believe the bird in the picture is a hen. And I think the other one may be too, looking at your avatar.

I am with Marianne: looks to me like he might have had an impromptu bath. My first thought was he had fallen in the water container. The fact that you say he looked normal again after about half an hour kind of confirms it.
