My baby Muffin doesn't freak out now when I put my hand in his cage and keep it there but he's just started to go a bit mad when I put my hand in - - running backwards and forwards along his perch about ten times and then onto his swing, down onto the ground, back on his perch and so on. He doesn't look scared but would you say this is him just playing/getting excited because he's getting used to me a bit more now? Also he doesn't chirp a lot, only now and then. Is this normal too in babies? Thanks for all former advice, so helpful to me

Don't worry aronya31, I'm sure he is fine, just getting used to you and getting excited. Hope he's got some toys to play with. Welcome to the forum btw. Would love some pictures of Muffin, we love pictures!

As long as he(?) doesn't seem to be scared, then just work with him and see where it leads you. It is possible he is itching to come out of the cage and fly around, but until you have the basics of stepping up and down in place, this could end up being a nightmare. Work on this first - step up and step down on command, and when this is happening most of the time them try having him out in a small room (door closed) and doing the same thing. Never do this when you in a hurry or about to go out.

If you mean onto my hand he is still far to wary to do that because I can only just manage to touch his chest with the tip of my finger. Anything more and he flies away.

Reading this reminds me of Beaky. His quarantine is up next week and I haven't made the progress with him I had hoped. He'd very nervy, and jumps even when I switch the light on. He runs when I put my hand in the cage. He eventually settles and will stay still when I put my hand in but will not take millet from me let alone step up and step down.
I sometimes think I chose the wrong companion for Squawk, as Squawks very confident and playful. I have also found out that Beaky was older than I first thought as he was 11 weeks when I got him, and I read somewhere that its hard to tame a budgie over 10 weeks. Nevertheless, he's here now and I will love him the same as Squawk. I feel quite protective of Beaky, but I am praying he likes being with Squawk.

Don't know if it is of any help, but my first budgie Betty was 6 when I rescued her and not tame and once she settled in to her surrounding I would put her food in the palm of my hand inside her cage. She quickly got curious and would come over to my hand. It didn't take long before she was jumping in my hand, running up my arm etc, and then she was at ease with me. Saying that now she lives in the aviary and doesn't care less about me now she has her friends with her!
