I did have 2 budgies briefly 10 years ago but my then boyfriend let them out one day and I haven't had them since.I have other pets (hamsters, gerbils, cats a dog and some fish) and as of today a budgie. I have him in a hamster cage(don't worry it's big-I don't believe in having small cages-it's 90 x 50 x60cm) and am leaving him to settle in while I read up about budgies. He was a bit of an impulse buy so I really wasn't prepared. Here he is

Hello and welcome to you both, What are you calling him? Lots of brilliant advice on cages, diet etc., here and everyone so helpful.
Others with more experience and information will help.

No name as yet-naming pets is always problematic-so far the kids want Derek Wingless(no idea why Derek and Wingless is from How to train your dragon only there it's Toothless.) He sat on my finger for a good 3 minutes earlier so I'm hoping he will be easy to tame. I've ordered a few more toys online I've been sat blinking at him feeling rather stupid but he was blinking back and tilting his head and opening his beak and making this cute little cchrrr noise-is that good?

Help how do I put a budgie to bed? Do I need to cover the cage?

Yes cover his cage at night and while he is settling for two or three days i would keep three sides covered during the day, it makes them feel secure .

A sheet works well; it is all I use. Hi and welcome to you and your new budgie.
