it is with a shattered heart and through tears that I type this....Gene passed a couple of hours ago.
He was ill at the beginning of January, but seemed to get better. A couple of days ago he went downhill and lost a lot of weight. He was on antibiotics and was injected with them at my vets the other day. But, to no avail. We - mainly my hubby - was feeding him via a syringe. He just got so weak. I listened from upstairs this morning as hubby went down to feed him, I heard him speak to him and felt relief he was still with us. A few minutes later hubby came upstairs with Gene, he'd died in his hands.
Poor little guy. He was only around a year old. I had high hopes for him, to go in the aviary and have friends. Instead he was resigned to being inside in his cage. He must of been so lonely, I'm not substitute for a friend. I'd been looking for another rescue budgie as a mate for him but none had come along.
When I think of when I rehomed him from the vets, his previous owner taking him in to have him out down due this eye problems, he was so little. Sat in a lizard tank with substitute perches made from medical supplies, and no toys upstairs in a room in the vets. God, I felt so sorry for him, I took him immediately. I so wanted him to be happy and integrate into the flock.
I hope he is happy and at peace. I will never forget my little Gene, his little face, the way he always jumped onto your finger with such faith even though he knew you were going to clean his eyes and it would hurt him, his little smell and the way he use to like his head being rubbed.
Rest in Peace my darling Gene <3
