I bought the yellow bird for my son 2days ago, he had been in a pet shop with the blue bird for a while, I ended up going back and buying the blue one a day later as I felt awful leaving it on its own in the shop. The person in the pet shop said that the yellow bird was a male but was uncertain about the sex of the blue bird. They seem to be getting along very well with no fighting and the yellow bird appears to be passing food to the blue one. Also does anyone have any ideas what variants they are. The photo doesn't show it well but the blue bird is much bigger than the other. thanks in advance David

Wow! Are these your first budgies? Great start, I must say. A Hagen Vision cage! And a fancy cover for the cage with bright colours that budgies love. Everything looks great.
The blue budgie is very young. I don't know what it is. Whatever it is, though, it's much too young for mating behaviour. So if the yellow boy is feeding it, it's just friendship for Bluey. I'd wait and see how the cere evolves. Really not sure.
Maybe other members can take a better guess.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your stay with us. The yellow budgie is a male. The blue one is debatable, which will keep our more experienced members debating. My inexperienced guess is female. The feeding is something that happens in the budgie world regardless of gender. It is usually a sign of a bond between the two, but sometimes just friendship.

I think they are both boys. The blue budgie is 3-4 months old and still has a purple cere but it will go blue.

What's up with Bluey's tail?? Is it just ruffled feathers, or is his vent dirty too?

What's up with Bluey's tail?? Is it just ruffled feathers, or is his vent dirty too? One of the reasons I bought the yellow bird initially was that the blues birds tail feathers were a little scruffy and as I was buying for my son I went for the yellow bird.I actually went back and got the blue bird as I felt guilty for leaving it in the pet shop on its own, I have put a bath in the base of the cage and it seems to be using it today and it doesn't look as messy but I'll have to keep an eye on it! Would you try and give it a gentle wash??? Any ideas as to improve its appearance is welcome?

I'd say both boys yellow bird older than blue bird, if he is bathing that's a good sign he will sort his own feathers. Just keep am eye on his vent to make sure that stays clean. Welcome

I think its a boy, the young boys usually have purple ceres that can look ''sparkly'' too

I am thinking both boys, but am going to say that the blue boy, looks like a cobalt to me (if the photo is a true representation, he looks the same as my own cobalt), is around the four-to-six month mark.
I think your older boy is a dilute light green - my educated (or not!!) guess, only.
