Hi everybody. I would like to ask some advice from more experienced budgie keepers. I have two budgies since December. I bought them as males but now I not sure anymore. I am not really sure if their ceres are healthy or not. Would you have a look guys and give me some advice. I read if I take them to vet they might die in stress and I would not want to risk it if they are all right. Thank you

Hi
I'm not sure why you think that they'll die if you take them to a vet.
You have two girls in breeding condition, which is why their ceres are brown and crusty.

I read somewhere that small birds like easily can get stressed. They fighting a lot since their ceres changed to brown. Will get an other cage tomorrow but it is not health anymore so will look for the right topic. Thank you for your help

Hi stev3r, in regards to birds getting stressed going to the vets, my Squawk has been a few times and has been fine. His vet is an 80 mile round trip, and he's handled the journey remarkably well. I asked a vet the very same question, and they replied that a bird would have to be extremely sick to die from stress by going to the vets. It's about weighing up what is best for your bird, but I personally would always opt to take my bird to the vet if I had concerns. Hope that's helped but from Marianne Marlow reply it seems your birds are ok. I've never owned females so couldn't comment on their ceres in case I am wrong. I have read though that 2 females can fight, but others on here will advise you in due course no doubt.

As Marianne has diagnosed for you, your two boys are two girls; they are in breeding condition and that is why they are inclined to fight. Do not have anything in the cage that could be remotely mistaken for a nest box, and if the fights get nasty, a second cage might be necessary.
If your birds are used to people there is no reason they should stress enough to give themselves a heart-attack from a vet visit. The more they are handled the less stress they will be under.
