Looks like I now have two great forums to learn and brag about my 2 guys. I have not had a budgie since I was a kid but have always found them to be very happy and energetic and a pleasure to be around. I tried to find a couple of guys as rumor has it that a boy and girl can become romantic and i am not a breeder, that two ladies just don't get along in the same house, just like humans. Tried to find a breeder within 75 miles, none so I ended up at a pet store. I got me a Blue and White and a Green and Yellow. Ran a what should I name them on my Facebook and Mac and Cheese was the winner. I have a nice large cage for them (19 x 30 x 36H inches) with natural wooden perches, a swing, bath, mirrors, etc. etc. I have had them one week now and am getting them used to me but so far they get agitated whenever I go to the cage, yes slowly. I know, it takes time and am talking to them, putting my hands around the cage area, moving very slowly, etc. I am just now starting to just put my hand into the cage and not move it but I am old so can only do it for a few minutes before muscles complain! I think I am doing most things correctly as I have been reading a lot, especially on "Talking Budgies" forum, which is mostly about taking care, health, etc. Not chatting!
My guys are a riot already. If I have the television on they will sing and chirp like crazy, hit the mute button and they instantly stop! Either they like TV or hate it, not really sure yet. I have a small cup with mirror that I use specifically for their veggies and fruits. I have found they love broccoli florets and eat them quickly. They do not like apples, or at least the one type I tried and really do not like shredded carrots. The blue went over to the cup right after I put the carrots in, took one in his beak and nibbled and then flew over to a perch and made some noise. Cheese then went over and did the same thing. I looked about an hour later and all of the carrots were now in the bottom of the cage!
I am not taking pictures etc. til the boys learn its ok and are somewhat tamed. I call them boys as they both have blue nostrils. The store had no idea their age and claimed that their turnover is fast for the blue, not as fast for the green/yellows but never have one longer than a month. They do not have the stripes over the forehead area indicating they are not babies for sure. They do have leg bands which I am told has their birth date but again, I don't want to "attack" them to get information that really will not be of much value. They are mine now, no matter the age.
I will have one other challenge with my guys. I am a "snowbird" as I migrate from Ohio to Florida during the winter months. My guys will have to get accustomed to a new home every six months. I will be buying another cage for my Florida home but may transport their toys so they have something familiar at both ends of the trip. I will be using a smaller cage for the 2 day trip.
