I posted here a couple of months back about breeding my two budgies Heather and Walter. Well they came into condition Heather has laid six eggs and as its her first clutch I didn't know what to expect. We now have two chicks in the nesting box who are 3 and 1 day old. I was just wondering when I can take them out and clean the nesting box as it is getting quite messy now on the perch and the top. Im very apprehensive to look inside as I don't want to disturb Heather as I have read she might flee the nest. It does have a wooden lid with a plastic slide and when I lift the wooden lid up to check on the chicks Heather does go to peck at the plastic and I'm so scared of disturbing them. When is it ok to take the chicks out to clean the nest? Thanks Charlotte, Heather, Walter and Chick 1 and 2 (who will be named later ) xxxx

Hello and good luck with the little ones Call me sad but I had a nest box cam set up in mine and although the outside of the box may look a bit messy you will be surprised how clean the inside is kept by mum! From what I saw the mother would always leave the nest to do her business and even when the little chicks start to poop she would scrape it off when dry and move it over away from the concave nest part. I left mine until they were two weeks old before cleaning them out after some advice on here. I got a couple of extra concave bottom inserts so I could put a clean one straight in each time. We then pretty much did this every other day and handled the chicks too which really helps them getting used to you if you want them to be tame that is. A couple of times we had to clean poop off of their feet so was ready with some warm water and cotton wool too. Nearer the end, just before fledging we started putting a little millet seed and rearing food in for them. There are people a lot more experienced than me on here. I have only been through it twice but I am willing to help if I can.
