Hi to one and all, i would just like to know as to how you go about breeding a violet budgie. Some say you put 2 dark factor parents (cobalt) and possible chances are you might breed a violet, is this true?

I'm no expert at this, but I would think one would need red in the mix, which budgies don't have the genes to create.

At the risk of hijacking a thread I have to ask How do you produce violet without using red? Red + Blue = purple. Varying the amount of red or blue will give varied shades of purple/violet. Yet there they are on the site you linked to, but it doesn't say HOW?

I had a violet before I got Mischief so that'd be in 2005 or thereabouts but I only had it (can't remember the gender) for a couple of months. Seemingly it was either born sick or became sick very very young, it had a growth and died very young, I wonder if the genetics had anything to do with it?

maybe it is not the violet in the way we would mix, as you say OP with red and blue... perhaps the colour shows as violet based on another colour or their skin or something.. if you get my drift..

Jasper is a gorgeous budgie SQ but......without meaning to offend or upset.....the 'violet' budgie I had was a definite lavender colour, Jasper looks more 'blue-ish' to me Mine, bless, was a lacewing a bit like the colouring in Hezz's link on Shirls chooks thread Anyway.....brought back memories of how short a time I had her/him and I wonder if sometimes trying to get a different colouring or 'type' can breed in more problems? Still....what do I know Yes it's not the best picture to show his colour. It's so hard to capture it on camera. He's here at the back of this one, not sure if that's any better though. Save

Yes I know what you mean about colour, it's very difficult to capture on digital especially (or that may be me) I think I see more of a violet 'tinge' whatever SQ he's a gorgeous, lovely budgie is Jasper

Thank you, he is a real cutie. I thought he was ill a moment ago. He was laying flat out on the bottom of his cage fast asleep. Gave me a scare.

Violet is a dominant colour adding factor. The violet factor enhances the existing colour of the budgie. To breed violets at least one of the parents must have the factor. Violet can be difficult to see on green birds and it is most visible over cobalt or sky blue.
