I'm wondering how one can make concaves for the nest boxes "at home"? Any suggestions? Anybody have it done before?

if you are confident with power tools you will need a 4" angle grinder fitted with a course 20 or 40 grit flapping disc simply mark the size of the concave you want and carefully sand away the 20/40 grit flapping disc will make short work of pine

Won't that light up/burn the wood? Guess not if you suggest this method; I just remember once I cut a wooden piece with the angle grinder it started to smoke right away.

I have made a rotating jig which allows me to lower the timber onto a lowered circular saw blade , one full revolution and the jobs done. It’s quite safe but as the riving knife and crown guard have to be removed I wouldn’t recommend anyone except the most experienced wood machinist to try it. It’s a little time consuming but the results are quite good resulting in a smooth shallow concave. Paul Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Regrettably, in some cases, we may prevent users from accessing items that are not within the scope of said restrictions because of limitations of existing technology. Anyway, I have been looking for material. Indeed mdf is not good for this purpose, it could harm the birds, especially the little featherless chicks. I just happened to get one of my cutting boards broken. Was almost new and it's from a quite fine wood. I think I will give it a try with the angle grinder when I get the time.

But I'm too careful with this rotating saws... Also a friend of mine cut off 3 fingers with a removed guard rotating saw... It doesn't worth the try for me... I'm confident with the angle grinder with the grit flapping disk though.
