Hi all, Happy new year! I have caught two of my four budgies mating over the past few days seem very persistent with it! I know its unusual for them to do it in front of you too :S I didn't buy mine to breed them these two have paired up on their own accord i had no nest in there and no toys in there they could use as a nest now I am not too sure what to do ? Do I separate them both from the other two and put a nest in? I also know she isn't "pregnant" as they don't go through that but she is looking rather fat! Any advice would be appreciated I am not sure exactly when they started mating but I caught them at it yesterday. Attachments:

It's ok Angie, if there is no nest box in nothing should happen, mine do that in the aviary

It's normal. The hen may lay an egg or two as well. Nothing to worry at this point.

I didn't know it was unusual for them to mate in front of us. Someone please tell Abbie and Hector that!
They are lovely looking birds!

Thank you all for your responses. I have been reading up and some websites are saying she has more chance of being egg bound if she doesn't have anywhere to lay? she hasn't been down on the floor too often and I haven't seen her take up a food bowl as a nest either this is the exact reason why I didn't want go into breeding as I am worried about the "what if's" for her sake plus as you can see from the photo she is a bit over weight out belle! I know that is another factor too.... Oh and when did the website change?

mating isn't allways for the intention of fertilising eggs, it's also a way of showing affection, courtship, dominance & many more there is no need to worry or run out & get a nestbox, mating is completely normal behaviour
