Brand New Budgie

Hi, I hope somebody can give me some advice. I've got a pair of budgies that have bonded really well and when I purchased the female the pet shop owner suggested I put a breeding box in the cage. The hen laid 4 eggs, one was infertile, 3 chicks hedged and of the 3 one was dead. The other two are well, chick 1 is a bit more advanced and is sitting outside the box. Chick 2 is still in the box and the hen feeds it (put egg, vegie, seed mix and powder in cage plus seeds on the bottom of cage). Now the hen is very amorous towards male but pecks Chick 1 at every opportunity. Male chick is often guarding Chick 1 by moving between hen and chick 1. The Hen is still feeding Chick 2 but does not allow Chick 1 to go back into the box, does not feed it and treats it like an enemy. I've now taken Male and Chick 1 out of the cage and put them in a separate cage. Since Male and Hen were sitting on side of their cages - obviously wanting to be with each other - I've moved the Male and Chick 1 in their cage to the back of the house, out of sight and out of sound for the Hen. Once Chick 2 is out of the box, I want to take the box away and return the male and Chick 1. Is this a good idea or should I separate the chicks from their parents? I don't want them to breed again in a hurry, as I think this must be very exhausting for the poor budgies. Maybe next year. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you - Dagmar

I hope someone knowledgeable helps you soon, but I think you've done your best for now..I know next to nothing on the subject except it is obviously, mommy bird wants to mate again and is pushing chick 1 away. I think it is good you took Daddy bird and (c1) out as not to distract her from her duties to chick 2, assuming she is still feeding him/her..
