Hi, Im new to the forum,
I have two budgies, merlin and charlie both are around 4 years old. The night before last I had noticed that merlins vent looked a little odd, more visible than normal, I thought she might be 'eggnant' as her and charlie go at it constantly. She was eating normally and as active as ever, though she was chewing on the ceiling of her cage, a new action for her. In the morning i noticed a bump and I decided i would give her a day to lay, shes never had eggs before. its now a little less than 48 hours since I noticed the odd vent, now it looks like there is an egg and shes having really big poops (not stuck to her vent though) I called a vet this morning and they told me to give her another day. Im really worried about her, she doesn't seem to be eating (i've tried to give her some boiled egg and shell for a calcium boost) but charlie often feeds her, other than that she is playing and running around normally.
My budgies arent tame so close examination is very difficult.
It will cost me 90$ just to get in the door to see the vet, another 30 or so to get a taxi to take me there and on top of that its the middle of a canadian winter. I love my bird but im not sure i can afford the cost of a vet visit, im in university so I dont have a job right now. I thought merlin was a boy up until a few days ago so i didnt really work to discourage their activities.
If anyone could give me any advice I'd really appreciate it.

Keep her really really warm, try to get some humidity around her too. If you have some liquid calcium ie Calcivet, put a drop directly into her beak or add it to a small amount of water and try to get her to drink. Warm olive oil on her vent will help too. I do hope she will be okay.

How is your little budgie now? If she(?) is playing and running around, that is good; does she fly? A photo would a good thing for us to have, particularly as you weren't even aware that she is a she; that might be still up for debate and something else is the problem (I doubt it, but best to be sure). Usually egg-binding in budgie hens leads to a very rapid decline and does need a vet to interfere to save her life.
