I had an egg hatch today (11th January) that was laid on the 21st December which makes it about three days late, and it was egg no. 5 of six.(no. six has already hatched) The chick looks like it’s a few days old rather than a newly hatched. I considered removing this egg presuming it had addled. So don’t be too hasty when removing eggs . paul

I never take addled or clear eggs out of a nest, they help the chicks to hold their heads up, and avoid the use of dummy eggs.

What a woopsie! And an interesting one to follow, Paul. So if an egg is designed to sustain a chick from developement to hatching (normally), I wonder how this egg sustained the chick for an extra three days. The chick has obviously not starved. Has it grown during those three days? Is there much difference in a newly hatched and a three-day-old? Wouldn't the egg have to be on the big side to hold a chick for an extra three days?? Sorry, those are sort of retorical questions, but if anyone has answers, I would be really interested to hear them. So very interesting!
