Although Iv'e had an avairy with finches a long time ago I thought it would be nice to start another with budgies, never having had them before. Not a lot of choice in this area (South West Scotland) and Iv'e ended up with 9 birds 6 male and 3 female, I now think that, although there is not a lot of bother, I should either get another 3 or 4 females, or try to get all same sex. they have a decent outside area and similar inside, I'm not interested in breeding, although the birds are, I would just like a happy healthy avairy. All comments/advice most welcome. Eric

What you have is fine. I had 6 cocks and 1 hen at one point. Eventually had 3 hens and 7 cocks. Not sure why you feel you need to get more hens.

If you give them the wherewithall to breed, they will grab it with both wings; have nothing in the aviary that looks remotely like a nest and most often all will be peace and harmony. You say "there is not a lot of bother" ..... so why not live and let live? You do not need even number through the aviary, but if you do decide to allow a pair to breed, please separate them from the main flock.
