Truffle, one of my Blue Orpingtons, had to be pts today. The vet said she had pneumonia. She had been a little poorly, with a cough for about a week, but then her breathing got very laboured. Vet injected her with Tylan yesterday, but she went downhill very rapidly. After 24 hours of very loud wheezing and coughing (me up all night nursing her) I decided that I wouldn't put her through this for another 24 hours. The vet was willing to give her another injection today, but if it had nil effect as the first one, no way would I want her to suffer any more. The vet said there were no guarantees and they would have to inject for a 5 day period and possibly she would still die. Hard decision, but it had to be made for her sake. This leaves her sister: Hazel, who is coughing now and again (off to vet again tomorrow with her!!), Dusty the Chocolate Blue and the two Buffs Tuppence and Tilly. Bit sad today. That's Truffle in the middle at the back. RIP my dear Truffle.

Oh, Shirls; I am so sorry. You love those chooks, I know; it must have been very hard for both you and Truffle to go through all that. All things crossed and the best of everything - wishes, luck, vibes etc - for Hazel. Rest in peace, beautiful Truffle. xx

Thank you all for your kind wishes. I did forget to put in my post that I was treating Truffle for her cough, but I wrongly diagnosed gape-worm! On checking the chicken forum, what she was doing was indicating gape-worm. Once again though I am blaming myself for getting it wrong. Unfortunately she went down really quickly so it was really too late to help her.

Back from two visits to the vet this morning. The one I always try and go to is in Herne Bay (that's where the chicken lady vet is, 6 or 7 miles away), there is a branch in Sturry where I live and she happened to be at Sturry this morning. Unfortunately the Baytril she wanted to inject Hazel with was in Herne Bay branch!!!! So, yes, me and Hazel had to motor over to Herne Bay two hours later, to get her injected. Long story short, I asked the vet if I could inject Hazel for the next four days, otherwise it would mean Baytril in the drinking water (no guarantees as far as dosage is concerned) and she agreed. So she has drawn up four syringes with the medication in for me to inject. No further appointment necessary (unless I am worried) so basically vet thinks Hazel will come through this. Btw she has a chest infection which has actually gone down into her lungs. This is exactly what Truffle had. The reason I didn't take Truffle to this vet is that she wasn't available, hence the 50 mile round trip to Dover to the other avian vet.
