Hi!
I live in Finland and am getting my first ever budgie tomorrow. Any first-hand tips? I am going to look around the forum now, but I thought I'd come and introduce myself immediately!

hello in Finland! once your budgie is in the cage then you need to leave him alone to get use to the sights and sounds of the house! but good luck! xx

Thanks Gaile. How long should I leave him/her alone to settle in, or should I just get on with things and go with his/her rhythm. S/he's going to be sharing her space with a trio of Japanese quails and Elvis, my boy Chinese painted quail, so I will be feeding and spot-cleaning them a few times a day, so I hope that won't hinder the settling-in phase...

I read that you can have a lone budgie if you intend to train them up and be with them, which I intend to be. Yes the aviary is large enough and high enough for everyone, but I do intend to let the budgie out and have flight of the room/house once s/he is settled in. The info that I read said that if you want to train a budgie, it's easier if you get just one as they are a flock species, which makes sense. It was on www.budgieplace.com. I have rats and would never just get one, so now I'm wondering if it's like that. If I notice that I am not putting the time in, I will get another one; however, I have an animal collection and it is my hobby and I spend at least an hour with all my creatures. I intend to spend longer with the budgie, however.

I have kept budgies on their own over the years when I've had the time, but now I don't so I built an aviary outside to house my budgies!!! I enjoy watching them. 2 of the 6budgies use to live in the house before they went outside so they are still a little tame! I also have a collection of pets 6budgies,2rabbits, 3guinea pigs & hamster also a tank of small fish!!!

I have a rabbit as well - Johnston! He's a feisty little Polish (we call them "dwarf hares" over here) but it's all mouth *lol* I also have 3 hairless guinea pigs, Séamus, Angus and Dougal - lovely creatures and very tame. I have a chihuahua called Samson and 2 geriatric cats and a ferret called Molly. I was worried about the cats and the ferret, but after thinking about it, Molly sleeps between 16 and 18 hours a day and the cats are too old to go bounding around the place after a bird. However, should the budgie go flying around the house, I will make sure the cats are behind closed doors... I have fish as well and Maudley is my pride and joy - a big male calico veiltail oranda. I've had him since he was small but is now about 5 inches and very round =) I will see how it goes with the budgie, and if I think s/he is not getting enough attention from me then I will get him/her a friend. Are budgies "easy" to tame - any tips? I've been watching YouTube videos re taming them and there seem to be quite a few methods, and many of the budgies seem tame anyway =/

Hi Pavlor and welcome. If you haven't found it already, there is a thread in Budgie Taming on here, I think callled "tips for getting a budgie on your finger", or something similar, started by juju, but we have helped a few other people out in that same thread. Have a read of that and it will give you somewhere to start, and then if you have questions once you have Budgie, maybe start your own thread there and ask away.

Thank you all for the welcomes! =) I now have Esme - am not sure if it's a he or a she, but she's an albino from Sweden, it seems, and she or he seems to be young. She or he is now settling in and I'm trying not to disturb him/her. How can you tell if Esme's a boy or girl if he or she's albino???

I'll start taking pics tomorrow as I don't want to disturb him or her tomorrow. The cere is orange like the bill, although when I put him/her to bed tonight, I *may* take a sneaky photo =)
