Hello,
I am building a cage for 2 budgies in a Victorian style. It'll be a wooden frame with steel bars.
Can I use galvanised steel for the bars and the floor tray? Is it Bird Safe? I don't want it as shiny as stainless.
I'm going to use Scandinavian Redwood (Pinus sylvestris) for the frame but what can I use to finish the wood? Bees wax? Linseed oil?
Any help gratefully received,
James

If you use galvanised steel, you will need to scrub down with a vinegar solution in the beginning and repeat around every six to twelve months.

Read a bit more, looks like there's a risk of zinc poisoning with galvanised wire even if you do use vinegar.

Also another thing to note. If one of your birds is a hen it's very likely that she'll chew her way through the wood.

Read a bit more, looks like there's a risk of zinc poisoning with galvanised wire even if you do use vinegar. This is why the washing down needs to be done on a regular basis.
