What's that blue stuff up there .... ?? It is a bit scary out here ... Enough's enough, now to get this thing off me ...... We are rather clumsy getting the harness on and off (someone does not stand still, not like all the good birds in the videos), but practise will get us there, I have faith. He does get a bit frightened outside; constant reassurance is needed, then he runs up my arm and tries to hide on my shoulder.

The progress you've made with Loki in the short time you've had him Hezz is amazing. A few trips outside and a little reassuring cuddle from his Mum and he'll be fine. It is "A whole nuther world" and it's there, waiting to be explored Loki, you're gonna love it big fella.

He does look inquisitive in the first photo but looks reassured to be on a finger in the third one. At times he just looks like an overgrown budgie.

What an experience for your beautiful boy! Such a brilliant job you've done ith him Hezz. What's next? How long is the lead on the harness? Will he be able to fly outside? Sorry about all the questions!!

I'm happy that others are enjoying Loki's journey as much as I am. Shirls, what's next?? Not sure! The harness elastic is only about 1.5 metres long. It is not meant to be something where you harness the bird up, tether him to a post and walk away. It is meant as a tool where you can take your bird outside with you for exercise (especially for the bigger birds) and companionship, outings etc, but with due diligence ... not something where you do not keep focus on what the bird is up to. Any chewing has to be discouraged and stopped immediately (otherwise the harness is compromised and he may fly away). For myself, I want to be able to take him outside and feel secure in doing so. We spend a lot of time on our deck in summer, and with him being a people bird, it would be lovely for him to be able to join us. It would also be lovely to be able to take him for a walk, even a short one, down the street. I also think it would be nice to see him having a fly out in that big wide world, albeit on the end of a version of a rubber band. As he is not flying distance yet, now is a good time to get him used to the distance restraints of the harness.

That is really lovely Hezz. I wasn't sure of what your intentions were and for Loki to spend time with you outside on the deck is brilliant. Much better than closing him inside while you all enjoy the outside. I am so envious on many counts!

Thanks, Shirls. Also to keep him out of the ceiling fans on the deck is a must. I should add that I have seen where people have added longer length to their harness elastic so that the bigger birds can have a decent fly. There is always the concern of keeping the string out of his way so that he doesn't become entangled and then try to fly. At least with it being short, he is not going to get any speed up before he is gently pulled back, so I don't see that he would be able to break a leg from any jerk. I am not sure he is actually enjoying the experience yet, but hopefully that will come.

Ohhhh look at him sporting his new Bra . You've done well to get that on him Hezz, im sure he will get used to the routine, do you use a treat/reward system for him when you do it? It will be so lovely to have him out with you, he could join you and Mac on your walks

That's one that hasn't been asked (as far as I know) how does he get on with Mac, or haven't they been allowed to meet?

It will be so lovely to have him out with you, he could join you and Mac on your walks I haven't used treats - I must confess to forgetting. I have now broken up some (prized) nuts to use as treats, but so far we haven't had another session. Oddly enough, we do pretty well getting the head strap on (we did a bit of practise with that only without putting his wings through and tightening the whole thing), keeping his feet out of the wing areas has been harder, and tightening the blasted thing is probably the worst of all, because it needs to be relatively small, so a bit fiddly, and then there are those feet and beak always in the way ..... and he won't stand still! That's one that hasn't been asked (as far as I know) how does he get on with Mac, or haven't they been allowed to meet? That one hasn't really been determined, OP. Mac is good with the budgies, but only gets close to them when they are in a cage, and he doesn't bother the wild birds that I feed, from the little doves to the scrub turkeys; they all co-exist. I don't think Mac would pounce on Loki if Loki flew and landed on the ground, but I doubt that I would be able to walk Mac and Loki together - Mac is enough of a hand-full on his own; he really does have serious mental health behavioural issues.
