Hi all, new comer here needing some advice. There's an awful lot of funny business going on between my two bugs at the moment! My question is, is this normal or will it result in Bluey being up the duff? I don't have a nesting box in the cage, and I'm wondering if I should put one in as I would hate to come down in the morning to find eggs in the corner of the cage. I wasn't really expecting this as I was told they were both boys, but they are very jiggy and I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing Thanks so much

Send us a photo and we might be able to tell you whether they are either male or female. Funny business can go on between same sexes, though it is not that common.
If you don't want eggs, do not provide a nest box or anything remotely like it - hollow anything, coconuts, happy- or snuggle- huts. If she does start laying, she will only lay one egg at a time, and the next wouldn't be for 48 hours, generally.

Hi , thanks for your reply. Trying to get a clear photo of these two is virtually impossible, but the one I'm not sure about is Bluey ( blue one, other one Mickey ). Thanks, Andrea

I would say the blue one is female, pic of other one isn’t clear enough to tell, lovely buds though.

Bluey is definitely a girly-hen. The crusty-brown cere says it all.

Blue is a girl, I'd say that the yellow face is a boy. Is his cere medium to dark blue?

Thanks for reading, Bluey does have a crusty dark pink cere whereas Mickeys is blue, I'm shocked to find out my lovely boy Bluey is in fact a girl, he /she has always been the more dominant one and has to have the highest perch! Still lovely tho, thanks for your help, Andrea

The girls are very dominant and will usually get their own way, especially as to having the highest perch or first dibs on the seed pots!

The term "hen-pecked" was coined for a very good reason. I think someone knew budgies very well.
