Good Evening,
Long story:
last year, we found a budgie on the road outside our house (random eh!?) was a wet rainy night. we took the bird in, but is was never quite right. we named him batman. By pure chance we ran into a breeder who told us to take batman to him to see if he could help. He gave us some meds etc and we decided to get another budgie from him to keep batman company as he seamed to pick up when in the breeders aviary.
Later that day we came home to Batman, dead on the bottom of the cage with his new friend Robin looking down at him. feeling sorry for Robin we got back in touch with breeder and purchased Rocky ( get it? Rocky Robin?) anyhow...
a few weeks back, we noticed the birds had started chewing up the paper in the bottom of the cage, and all of a sudden, Robin was spending a lot of time sulking at the bottom of the cage... we thought he was poorly...
Until 30th December 2017 when HE laid an egg. Ok, Robin was a she, and the dominance showed by Rocky wasn't dominance... so we tried to contact the breeder to inform him of this dud male budgie, but had no luck getting in touch. Same day, Robin ate her egg. Two days later Robin laid another. managed to ring the breeder and he told us to remove the egg and pop and see him. He sorted us out with a nest box and other stuff (for free!!!!!!). Two days later, Robin laid her third in the nest box.... And ate it again...
then two days later she Laid her fourth egg, again in the nest, this time she kept it for a day, then two days...etc etc...
Now we have her nesting on six eggs (she's laid 9 in total now, her 9th was laid tonight, first three eaten or removed)
She's still popping out for poops or nookie but other than that she stays in the nest... any advice will be greatly appreciated. all six eggs have been candled tonight and 3 are definitely fertile, so my guess is that at least one is infertile and the other two are maybe too early to tell... but looking at the colour of the eggs, I don't think the other two will be fertile to be honest ( it could change.... I don't know)
So yes, I'm a first time breeder, hints tips or advice is greatly appreciated. female is a pied, male is spangled, both are blue and white and are English varieties.... they make the budgies in pet shops look like dwarfs...
Look forward to hearing from you.
