Went in the bird room this morning and noticed that the hen from nest box 2 was sitting away from the nest box. On a closer look I saw she had a sore eye, baldy head, and cut chest. So I checked the nest box to find one of the chicks has had a lump bitten from its head and the other chicks cere was bleeding and it's wing is badly bruised. They were both freezing cold too. So I took them out and warmed them up and fostered them into another nest box which only has one chick in it. I'm guessing that the male had tried to hurt the babies and the mum tried to stop them and got attacked too. Ive removed the mum and dad from the cololny and put them in a separate cage. Do you think I have done the right think as I'm worried now that the hen they are fostered too will eat them???

You have done right in fostering Serz, just keep an eye on them for a couple of days, are you sure that it was their patents that attacked them, and dad that attacked mum ?? ,could have been another hen that wanted their nest box !!!! this is one of the drawbacks with colony breeding

I am not sure no Ian it could have been another hen or cock but I didnt no what was worse...leaving them with there parents and hoping it wasn't them or fostering out? Like I say the chicks were icy cold when I got them out and I thought one of them was dead so I took them in the house and warmed them up and they seemed to perk up then so the mother must have not been sitting on them all night

found out the problem i think. One of my females thats just hit maturity is wanting to nest in her nest box which is causing the fight so i have put the parents that i took out back in and took the other female out. I feel so cruel on her tho as she is going mad trying to get out of the cage that i put her in

yeah ian she has paired herself up but the cock that shes paired up with is also feeding another chick which has just had eggs so this is my problem, i cant remove him incase these eggs hatch and theres no-one to feed them. Im definalty feeling the problems with colony breeding this time round. Im thinking of extedning my aviary so that it creates another room so i could have more nest boxes and a holding pen for if any of them need seperating rather than having to cage them as im worried they will be stressed. Yeah Nigel theres nothing worse than that and its always after you have been telling someone how great it is ha ha. I have my fingers crossed for you that you got them out in the nick of time
