Hi there,
I'm planning to breed my budgies next breeding season and I was just wondering if any of you guys had any advice? I have two pairs of budgies, one is extremely bonded. I've decided I'm going to go for cage breeding ether than colony breeding. Any advice on helping them to settle into a cage and breed in a breeding cage?
Thanks!

My 'breeding' happened by accident.....but advice I got and took on board was make sure they have a good varied diet, lots of veg and spinach for iron, iodine blocks, calcium supplement for their water, cuttlebone, a supplement like daily essential to sprinkle on their food. I also ordered some guardian angel (never needed to use it but better to have it then need it and have to order it) and chick formula just incase there was any rejection of the chicks. I had syringes incase I needed to use the formula but you can get spoons with tall sides which I think would be better. I had a nestbox with a concave bottom and put shavings in. The result was 4 healthy chicks who are now nearly 4 months old. Good luck!

Thank you very much!! I have Cuttle bone, but no iodine. I've looked for iodine before but haven't managed to find it yet.

Have a google of iodine blocks, or iodised peks. They are relatively cheap to purchase online if your local pet store hasnt any.

Okay thank you, I'll definitely look into getting some before breeding season. Also when breeding, should they be supplied with boiled egg or egg food?
And what encourages the hen to lay an egg?
Thanks!!

I don't have experience with encouraging a hen to lay - sorry.
I can only presume make sure they are happy and a bonded pair. Sometimes bonded pairs don't lay and it's just one of them things. It can't be forced.
I did have some egg food, the two I had who had a clutch didn't really bother with the egg food - they liked the veg and millet!! But yes egg food is good for them especially when breeding. I had the dried egg food. I've tried with fresh egg mashed us but had no takers so have always bought the dried stuff since then.

Okay thank you so much for your advice! I'll probably go with dried egg food instead of boiled egg then. Thank you so much!!
