Hello! I recently bought two 8 week old budgies ( from the same mother ), a blue one and a green one and introduced to my home. The next day I tried slowly putting my hand ontop the cage and it did not disturb them at all. I supposed they have already been hand fed before and are then not afraid of hands, so I tried holding millet seeds (the whole stick) and move it closer to the bird, very slowly of course and the blue one came rushing in to start devouring the seeds, but the green one was shy and stayed about 10 cm away watching the blue one eat to get the courage to eat some for himself. I did this once a day for like 3 minutes for 2 days and then tried to make it so that they would have to step on my finger to reach the seeds, and after some minutes of staring the blue one finally stepped on my finger and started eating. The green one started doing the same a bit after. Then I tried to put some seeds they have in their food bowls in the middle of my hand and set it flat infront of them. About 15 minutes later they started stepping up to my palm to eat the seeds without showing a single sign of fear. The next day I started slowly approaching them with my finger to pet their wings when they were facing the other way of the door and their belly when they were looking at me. The blue one was starting to get shy and started to walk out of reach about 5 seconds after I started slowly petting him and the green one stayed until he got bored ( usually around 40 seconds before walking away ). I then started trying to get them to step up and I managed to do it pretty easely with the green one but the blue one hesitates alot and takes me about 15 minutes to get him confident enough to step up. I then tried releasing them into a big room with no windoes, mirrors, cats or doors open to get them to practice flight since they were still somewhat babies and didnt know how to fly straight without knocking into a wall. When I tried letting one out, the one in the cage did a sort of scream which I think is the "I am here" scream, and they both started stressing up and tried to fly to each other, resulting in the blue being in the cage and the green one flying around near the walls to try to find the blue one I think. He calmed down after finding the blue one and flew ontop of his cage, and then the blue one tried to find a way out. I understood they wanted to be together so I let the blue one out too and they started flying in a circular motion to then perch on furniture and staying there until I basically made them step up to put them inside the cage, which can take alot of time because the blue one is still shy. That is basically the backstory so you can tell me if what im doing is working/not working to answer to the following question. But first some more behaviours I still dont understand:
- When they both eat they tend to start flapping their wings with the blue one then going inside the food bowl blocking the green one from eating, I read that this can be due to cramped food bowl spaces with multiple birds, what can I do to prevent this?
- When I start washing the dishes about 10 meters away from the cage with low water, they start screaming... They dont like water? Or do they not know what it is? Perhaps they want a bath? What do I do?
- In the mornings when I go remove the blanket from the cage I see ALOT of un eaten seeds on the floor which are on the opposit sides of the cage than where the food bowl is. Why do they do this? How do they do this? Did I put too much food in the bowl? They dont like the seeds?
- Everytime I slowly pick up the cage to move it to where they sleep ( because the green one has some sort of nightmares ans wakes up screaming from time to time ) and when I enter the room they start streching their wings and it usually goes like: Both wings up, one side streching, then the other side. Does this mean they want to go outside the cage?
- When I make the green one step up and slowly bring him towards my face, I am able to touch his nib with my nose. Does this mean he trusts me a bit?
- At around 6PM to 8PM they start standing on one leg, alternating every 30 minutes or so. Why?
How do I approach this situarion, where I want to tame them both but when I try to take one out the other one panicks, and where one is shy and the other one is not?
Did I do well to make them trust me?
How should I make the blue one less afraid of me?
Thank you for reading this far hope you can help me.
With regards,
Kian
