Hi All!
I'm currently trying to breed my budgies. I have them in a breeding cage with a budgie nest box and 2 perches. So far the male has been in and out of the box constantly and they have tried to mate but I don't think it was too successful. They preen each other lots and clearly adore each other so I know they are a bonded pair. Yesterday I saw the female in the nest box for the first time. Both her and the male were in there. Why does my male keep going in the nest box? Isn't it only meant to be the female who goes in the nest box? Also my female is slightly fluffed out around her bottom, does this mean I can expect an egg soon? Thanks in advance for any answers/advice!

All I can say is be patient. If they are in and out of the nest box it sounds like they are preparing it for laying eggs, especially if they have been mating.
Have you got shavings in the nest box? Also, any supplement vitamins and calcium for the hen for when she starts laying and raising the chicks? It'll drain her so she needs all the extra help you can give her.

Okay thank you! Yes there is shavings in the box.
At this stage she has Cuttle bone, I have other calcium things but my budgies have never seemed to like them. She is eating a lot of Cuttle bone tho.

You can get a calcium supplement that you add to their water, it will help. Calcivet is the one I used, you can buy it online.
Also a good diet will help, good seed and a range of healthy veg to eat alone with something like 'daily essential 3' which you can also get online.

Okay thank you! I'll start giving them more greens and try and get another calcium supplement then. Thank you for your replies!
