Bless him, it takes time to regulate but im sure you will get there, your doing so well. I worked with a girl years ago who refused to even try when her lovely dog was diagnosed, he was only 7 and a beautiful boy, she had him put straight to sleep, i don't know how she lived with herself That makes me so sad skysmum, how awful

I worked with a girl years ago who refused to even try when her lovely dog was diagnosed, he was only 7 and a beautiful boy, she had him put straight to sleep, i don't know how she lived with herself The same happened with a friend who had Teddy's brother. He was overweight and developed diabetes at 9 years old. They had him put to sleep straight away. What upsets me is we were given the chance to have either Teddy or this other dog. I wanted to have both but we couldn't afford them so we chose Teddy. Also, if he had been looked after properly he would not have become overweight and may not have had diabetes until he was much older like Teddy. Teddy had 7 and a half years longer life than his brother.

skysmum that is shocking, i don't know how she could live with herself either I just think that pets don't ask to be homed with us, so if you are going to give a home to an animal you should do everything you can to give them a happy life; and if they get ill you do all you can for them and explore all the avenues. I'm convincing myself daily Alfie has cushings. Vet tells me we can't test until the diabetes is regulated, forums online tell me you can and to ignore the vet. Some days I think my head may actually internally combust.

I still well up when i think about it and it's 15 years ago, he was a lovely collie boy, so full of life despite his diagnosis I don't understand why people take on a pet if they are not prepared to care for them as you would a human family member, just beyond me really . I so hope you can get your little boy regulated soon and pray cushings isn't found although this can be treated too i understand. Healing vibes being sent for your boy and you.

Just an update: As Alfie's diabetes is almost regulated the vet has this morning done a Cushing's test. Results expected tomorrow or Monday. When I left him this morning he usually walks off with the vet into the back room but this time he didn't want to and was pulling to come with me It is so hard leaving them there for testing when they don't understand what is going on and why you are leaving them when they want you the most. He is back home now with Lexie and sleeping on his blanky. On a sidenote Lexie is on a week's course of steroids as she hasn't been right recently and the vet suspects arthritis in her spine.

Sorry I've not been on to update, I've been meeting myself coming back this week - we got the results Monday night and it's a borderline negative. Numbers have to be 600+ to be diagnosed as having cushings; Alfie's were 590. I've explained the weight is plummeting and the hunger is unbearable for him (he eats soil/dog poo) and they've increased his insulin and we are BG testing again weekend after next. I really, really don't want him to have cushings, diabetes is hard enough for him but manageable. Thanks for your support everyone

Poor Alfie feeling so hungry all the time. I hope the extra insulin helps. It must be really frustrating still not knowing for sure if he has cushings.

We are still rooting for you, Alfie. Good luck, both of you. I hope you manage to get him stable sooner rather than later, poor boy.

I hope that Alfie stabilises soon, poor boy, it must be hard on him, and you too.

He is ok thanks Jane, has his insulin like a good boy. He is constantly starving still and has an enlarged liver. I've tried milk thistle but he spits them out. Am still trying that with him, hiding it in food etc.
I still worry about Cushing's, with the results so borderline and the hunger he has.
But he is a lot better than he was back in march I am happy to say.

Does he have enough slow release carbohydrates in his diet to keep him full longer?
