the other day. Hettie managed to get herself egg bound. After a couple of warm baths in Epsom Salts, some vaseline as well as some Preparation H up the rear end, she managed to lay. Took all afternoon and she laid about 6.00 pm. Now, after her 'spa baths' she has gone broody!! Better a broody hen than a sick dying one! I keep taking her out of the nest box and she sits where I put her, however not for long, she ventures back into the nest box! But here she is, from when I got her up this morning. Broody by on Flickr Forgot to mention the quarterd Tums that my daughter cut up for me or should I say Hettie, each piece was placed securely into a grape and obviously Hettie just woofed them down. Tums are a great source of calcium and together with Cod Liver Oil is a good thing to give when egg bound(apparently). Well, it worked for us!!

Poor Hettie, I hope you see some improvement soon.

Blimey, no wonder she's gone broody. What with getting an egg stuck, then all the attention to get it loose. To cap it all something going up where they should come down. Poor Hettie.

Oh you do make me laugh OP!!! The preparation H is for reducing any swelling caused by the straining and the vaseline is to help the egg down! I won't even mention the gloved finger up the bum!!!

I am so glad that Hettie seems none the worse for her ordeal, poor chookie. Hopefully that will be the end of that saga.

How is Hettie doing?
Hopefully she's recovered from the undignified process now?

Aww look at Hettie in that photo! She is a pancake bless her! Tell her from me that "Shrove Tuesday has gone now so get your act together young lady" *finger wag* Glad she managed to pass the egg - no doubt any egg bound bird is a distressing thing for all x

Yes, very distressing samwiseg. AND would you believe.... 'broody begets broody' so now Dusty has gone broody and she didn't even have a spa bath!!

Hmmm, I remember you saying before that once one goes the others can follow, so I did wonder if this was going to be the end of home-grown breakfasts for a while.

Thankfully not Hezz, as I do have two other layers, that fingers crossed, haven't gone broody. I am pleased to say also, that after closing all nesting areas yesterday there is no sign of a broody chicken anywhere today. They were both running about so much trying to get into the nest boxes I think they wore themselves out! Nevertheless the two broodies won't be laying for a couple of weeks at least. But hopefully, with no signs of broodiness showing the others won't follow suit.
