Hi I have a question that I hope someone can answer for me. I am trying to breed a pair of my Budgies, I have done extensive research on the internet, reading books and watching videos and now hoping to get more with this forum. My question is this. I have noticed in a lot of the videos I have watched that babies are no longer in a nest box but they appear to have been moved to a open box inside the cage with the parents. Is this what should be done and if so at what age? I have been unable to find the answer anywhere.

Once the chicks are ready, they will leave the nest box to explore. It is important to get a nest box with the appropriate distance from the floor to the entry/exit hole so that they don't climb out too early. Obviously, the oldest will almost always be the first and once the first one does the others generally follow closely. This is when you start putting millet and seed on the floor for them to learn to forage and crack seed for themselves, with Dad showing the way, if he is pulling his weight.
When they first start to leave the nest box, you can put them back in and for a few nights they might stay there but it won't be long before they will not. This is when you can remove the nest box and add an upturned cardboard box to the bottom of the cage, with a space cut out of one side for them to go in and out of. They will use the hide on the bottom of the cage to sleep in for a while before and while they are learning to perch. Once they are perching, generally within a few days, they will stop using the hide box at night, and once they have all perching at night you can remove the cardboard box as well.
