Zooplus excelled themselves and delivered Stuart's new Hagen Vision L01 within 48 hours. I had fun setting it up, and he seems to love it already. He flew straight in too as soon as I put it in place of where his original cage (now his travel cage) had been. Any suggestions or comment as to the set up would be greatly appreciated. I've two Y shaped wooden perches and a nest hammock toy on order which I'll use to change it up a bit. The wooden perch is a piece of willow I got in the park near my house and he seems to love it. I've also used the perches supplied with the cage. I've put in his original white food and water containers until he finds the new ones.

The cage looks great. He might want some perches higher up. The Range is very good for wooden perches as they only cost £1.49 there. The nest hammock you mentioned I’ve never had one but I’ve read on here that they are not good as the budgies can get their claws caught in them. I’m sure someone will be able to elaborate on this later or correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks Jane. I've already ordered the perches, but they were about that price too. I'll definitely put some higher perches in and make sure the nest hammock isn't dangerous for him. X

On the issue of getting claws caught, this can be a big problem with rope perches as well. Personally I'm not a fan of them at all, not only for the danger of ingested fibres and caught feet and claws, but they also offer no variety in either size or texture, both of which are necessary for the prolonged good health of the birds' feet. Rather than spending money on buying perches, see if you can't scrounge more fresh branches from someone, somewhere. There are plenty of sites on-line that will tell you whether certain trees/branches are safe for bird usage. Check them out for what might be available in your local area.
He needs toys, things to keep him stimulated and entertained - bells, swings, things that jingle and jangle and things to chew like balsa bits, dolly pegs etc otherwise he will be chewing on those cotton ropes.

Thanks Hezz I never knew that about rope perches. He's got a swing on the right of the cage, which is hard to see, and the hoops toy and the coiled rope have bells on them, but I'll get some more toys and branches today, and move the ropes to the top of the cage, where he's less likely to be chewing. (I mean on top of the cage, as an outside perch) I'll keep an eye on them for wear and tear too.

Watch the bells that come on the toys. They will not be of good quality and will rust easily. Rust kills birds. Get yourself some stainless steel bells, an expense to begin with but you will have them forever if looked after properly. I've had mine for more than 10 years and they still look as good as the day I bought them. Budgies love anything that is shiny and makes a noise.

Oh wow. I'll need to get some and replace what's on them. I couldn't bear something to happen to my wee bud. I'm so attached to him already.

That is a lovely set-up reenie. Love the cage. Those nest things are really a no-no, so I would ditch that as Hezz has advised. I really do like the cage though, better than my Ferplast Piano 6 which looks a similar size to yours.

Thanks @shirls the piano 6 is a bit longer and quite a bit taller, and was actually the one I wanted, but as you can see in the pics, it would have obscured my clock, and would have overhung the table. I'm really pleased with this one though, I just wish I'd checked first before I ordered toys and perches, as I seem to have made a few booboo lol. They're cheap though, so won't be a major loss fortunately.

I was after some stainless steel liberty bells a few months ago but no one in the UK sells them. I found this link on one of Hezz's old posts and they were delivered within a couple of weeks, obviously the p&p is a bit steep but it's worth it. myparrotshop.com/stainless-steel-liberty-bell/

The small ones (and med) are out of stock again. I was looking to see if I could get a couple more after making the above post. Their bells are top quality but I know that they did have problems a while back with their supplier going out of business so had to find another source. Not as reliable, or possibly not able to keep up with demand at reasonable price. I did find some on ebay (Australia) for around the same price, but I don't know what the quality is like (304 is the grade that most cookware is, so should be okay) ... link if anyone is interested ... www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-x-Parrot-Bird-Toy-Liberty-Bell-Hook-Stainless-Steel-304-Small-/291486816498?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

I ordered 4 stainless steel cowbells on amazon from a parrot supplier for £14.99. They are quite big at 2", but I think that includes the hook at the top. On a lighter note, Stuart learned to ring the bell on his toy on demand yesterday. He seems to enjoy learning, so I'm taking advantage to teach him as much as possible in case he twigs that he doesn't have to.

Clever creatures birds! Training Stuart to ring the bell has had an interesting development. Instead of me telling him to ring the bell and giving him millet as a treat, he seems to have trained me. Every time he fancies a nibble of millet.....he rings the bell, then looks at me expectantly. I'm now trying to train him to understand 'wait' so that he only gets millet when I TELL him to ring the bell .
