reenie, regarding the grit question, you will find differing opinions from different parts of the world, as well as different generations. The problem there is that most people don't understand the difference between soluble and insoluble grit. Insoluble grit is the big bad one for our parrots, the birds who husk their seed and don't require a "grinding board" in their gut to break down their food, unlike the pigeons and doves etc who do use (insoluble) grit, usually in the form of small pebbles to help their digestion. As Shirls has mentioned, oystershell grit can be safely given to parrots to use as and when they require. It is known as soluble grit and generally comes in the form of very tiny shells or very small pieces of shell, which is broken down by the digestive acids, and as mentioned can be a good source of calcium to our pet birds. Sorry if that sounds like a lecture, but the difference is important. Most online information is aimed towards insoluble grit, even if they may only mention the word once, thinking it covers everything, and this is where the confusion arises.
