I would love for Stuart to talk - it's ok if he doesn't, but I want to give it the best chance. I had read that having a mirror can hinder talking, so haven't got a mirror for him. I also read that they can cause psychological problems/they bond with it. I was reading old threads and saw that Bailey loves mirrors, and is a great wee talker (sorry, can't remember whose budgie he is), and several of you more experienced owners have mirrors for your wee guys. Stuart loves the big mirror at my mum's, so I think he would quite like one, but don't want to put paid to his talking (currently copying syllables and intonation) or ruin our bond which is coming along nicely. What do you recommend?

Sorry Rennee I have forgotten how old Stuart is? .....I can’t be much help, except to say Charlie is now 5 1/2 months and a great talker and has never had a mirror, and has actually never shown any interest in mirrors at all. I do know of budgies that do have mirrors and are very good talkers though.. Do you get the time to sit with Stuart and teach him? I am home all day so I talk a lot to Charlie. I wait until he is quiet and then have long chats with him, repeating things over and over. You can tell by their eyes when they are really listening ( they sort of squint)....... Sorry I have gone off the question you asked and I am sure someone will give you a more definitive answer about mirrors......

Mine have mirrors, Pip has a 6 foot long mirror on the glass shelves which he loves and I have to clean every day due to him feeding it and pooping on the shelves. He doesn't talk except maybe an odd word but I'm not really bothered. The mirrors make him happy and now Misty, who we have just had a week sleeps next to his mirror. The only thing which ruined our bonding was Jo who passed away 2 weeks ago, since she has gone, he is the most affectionate and lovable little thing and very annoying when I am trying to do something and he is sitting on my hand. Jo used to sit on the crochet needles and whatever I was doing she would be inside it or on top of it. I think my husband thinks I talk enough for us all in this house.!!!!!

Thanks ladybird Stuart is probably just over 6 months or so, I've had him about 3. I do sit and talk to him and he is trying hard.... Let's say, I know what he's saying but no one else would. It's more the right number of syllables and the right general sound rather than fully formed words. He's doing well though, and we're bonding, so that's good enough for me. X

Have a look on youtube for Disco the talking budgie, who is a brilliant talker. It was so sad about Jo. So sorry, the poor wee mite. I have watched Disco, and Stuart has picked up the snoring from him. He also seems to try Baby bird, which I don't say, so I reckon that's come from Disco too, and a little beat boxing. Now that you mention it, Disco does have a mirror.... Job for today - I know he'll love it.

That’s how they start,. At one point only us could understand him, then all of a sudden he became very clear.......Seems to me that Stuart will soon be a good talker too. Just keep at it and you will be rewarded. Charlie’s latest is .......lCharlie is a very chatty boy...... He isn’t wrong either lol

Well I got him a mirror and a couple of other toys - a cube-frame with bells on, which swings and a 'big parrot' shredding toy with paper stuffed in raffia tubes on a ring. He loves both of the other toys, but won't go near the mirror! Contrary wee blighter lol.

Charlie has a disco ball bought from ' pets at home" and he loves talking to that. But he isn’t interested in real mirrors at all.....Sounds to me as though Stuart is going to be a good talker....they just need time to practice. Honestly he will get clear all at once 👍🏻

Pickle my talker had mirrors and loved anything shiny. He would talk to the radio and also talk into the corner of the room. I think it made a different noise. I broke my foot when Pickle was very young and unfortunately he picked up a few swear words (can't think where from! ) He was really funny and would say some really comical things there are videos of him on utube. Just search Pickle talking. I still miss the little man.

Wow. Pickle was talking really well. I thought it was the radio at first. He's got quite a deep voice for a budgie lol. You must really miss the little guy. X

He secretly taught Pickle to say boobies and he just said it one day and I laughed my head off. Yes I really do miss him we had him 5 years, he was my pal.

Back to the mirror debate, I don't think there is any real correlation between having a mirror and not talking. My first budgie was the talker in the family and he always had mirrors. He would practise his talking to the bird in the mirror. I think if they are going to talk, they will, whatever it might be that starts them off down that track, but usually the talker will be, or have been for some time, an only bird.

A mirror (dozens of mirrors) didn’t stop Bailey talking

I just think a lone bird either talks or it doesn’t but I do think they need to be younger the better.
