Charlie started his first moult quite late at about four months, and is still moulting about two months later. It’s mainly little downy feathers now and the odd long one. He is perfectly well and has no bald bits, but he seems very itchy constantly preening. He is not too keen on bathing ( dirty boy) , and doesn’t like being sprayed much either.....Is it normal to moult for so long?

It can be. A lot depends on their individual environment - what it is like in your house/his main living space. If it is constantly warm, it is possible that will continue a moult longer than normal. Make sure your (his) room is not dry, add some humidifiers, shallow bowls of water etc around the room to help. Artificial heating or cooling dries the air much more than opening a window, for example. If there are no bald patches and he seems perfectly fine in all other ways, don't worry about it too much. Bathing/misting would be of help but not all budgies like a bath, either. You can try hanging sprigs of foliage up dripping wet and see if he will rub himself all over them. (This is their natural way to wash)

Thank you Hezz,. It’s not too warm, and I often have him in the fresh air. No bald patches and he seems very well. I wonder if the fact that he is an exhibition bird has anything to do with it?

It may, he certainly is a very feathery bird. I do remember being concerned about one of mine who was given to me when things didn't work out with his first owner. He seemed to moult longer and more often than any of the others as a youngster, but as he has matured that has settled into a normal rhythm. Hopefully the same happens with Charlie.
