Charlie is 7 1/2 months now. He was late starting his first moult and it lasted a long time, and only finished about a month ago. He now seems to have started moulting again.....lots of tiny feathers at the bottom of his cage again and he is preening a lot again......He is otherwise really well and happy.....I just wondered if this is normal?

Mine are moulting again too and I’m sure it wasn’t that long ago they had one so I’d be interested to know the answer to your question as well ladybird.

Moulting doesn't necessarily follow a time line; more often it depends on the season. Our indoor birds are also subject to the temperature that we keep our houses at, for those of you with proper seasons requiring heating etc. They will drop a certain amount of feathers if the weather turns unbearably hot, for instance. If you suddenly turn on your radiators/heaters/fires or whatever you will find the same thing quite often. some moults have heavy and may leave the buds looking decidedly scrappy, affect their temperament and energy levels while others will be much lighter and hardly affect them at all. So the answer is ... it is not unusual and is nothing to worry about. If you notice obvious bald patches that don't fill in as the new feathers grow, that's the time to start to be concerned.

Thank you Hezz that was a really helpful explanation. The British Weather , especially this year has been very unpredictable, heatwave one day ,and I have had Charlie in the sun / shade, and then days where we have had to have the fire lit. So yes that explains a lot.....

We have discussed this once before ladybird and we ended up calling them Big Moults and Mini Moults lol! They would have their usual one and then have a little one. If you think of it a bit like how your hair grows it is a similar thing, not all of your hair strands grow at the same time, they grow at different times. If they did grow all at the same time we would end up all looking like Cousin IT rom the Addams Family! So birds moult only a few at a time as if they did them all, well they would be bald! So perhaps he is just having a mini moult this time - if you can what would help if giving a good bit of protein in his diet at these times like egg food - you can either by dried egg food or hard boil an egg and mash the yoke up for him to have

He will eat the dried egg food, but won’t touch the real thing. He has tonic seed twice a week and basil and parsley. Fussy little man really 🙃.

It is good that he will eat the dried eggfood. At least with that you don't have to worry about remembering to take it out after a few hours.
