Hello. I was wondering if anyone uses vet wrap bandage, particularly to cover perches? Similar to this: link to productIs it okay for budgie use? Can a toenail get caught in it? Does it have to be changed/cleaned every day or can the odd poop be wiped off as & when? Any advice appreciated. Many thanks.

I have used this on branches in the past for Dorothy, she had special needs. She had had broke legs that had set wrong and she walked on her knees/ankles, it helped pad it and was easy for her to balance on due to the texture. It does clean for a while but will need to be continously replaced due to the texture, dirt starts to stick in the little holes. Budgies will want to tear, rip and destroy it, mine did at least As a side note, this was used with a splint to fix Mabel's broken toe (they splint the toe and leg and wrapped cotton wool then vet wrap around). Rita also had this on her feet when she got sores, like little shoes. Was terrible and I mean terrible to get off budgies, sticks a like glue to them. Branches are fine as you can pull and tear at it with some force to get it off whereas you can't with a budgies limb.

Not sure about perches, but I know that Shirls has used it on her chicken's feet (which would make me think it's ok for bird feet in general) when they've had a bumblefoot excision. Perhaps she may be able to advise?

Poor Dorothy - sounds like she had a tough time with her legs. Their limbs seem so fragile so I can imagine how difficult it was to remove! I am thinking in advance how to make Perry's life easier as he has a growing lump. I think it jars a bit when he jumps onto a hard perch. We have rope perches but it seems a waste not to use the other perches in some way too.

Vet wrap is fine to use on perches, sweetpea, and safe enough for budgies until they start to chew on it. It is recommended as a perch wrap for birds with bumblefoot, but again you have that chew-factor to be wary of. For Mango's swing, I wrapped paper rope around the perches, so that it didn't matter if she chewed on it, and lo and behold she hasn't even tried to!! It also made the perches wider for her which is a good thing for a bud with balancing problems, plus the winding around has given the perches some added texture as well. Something to consider, perhaps?

I only wrapped it around once sweetpea. Dorothy got a hernia though so had a lump too between her legs and I noticed she tended to use the flat perches more than cylinderical perches.

Perhaps she may be able to advise? Sorry sweetpea, I'm a little late to answer this, but good advice has been given already. It is a bit of a bitch to remove if wrapped quite firmly round a chicken leg!! and I would imagine a bit tricky removing from a budgie leg/foot. As far as perches go I would recommend it, and if you wrap a couple of layers I'm sure that will be more comfortable for any budgie, better than a hard perch. As mentioned, chewing could be a problem. I have used vet-wrap quite a bit on the chooks and would thoroughly recommend it's uses. I got mine from Pets at Home, but my local vet sells it too.

Thanks Shirls. Hopefully I'll never need to wrap it around a budgie leg. I don't think my lot will be into chewing - if anything they will be too scared of it to chew it. I'll try it on a non-critical perch first!
